Providing a Safe Space for Ashkelon’s Youngest
In a year that occurred under the shadow of war, Keren Hayesod-UIA’s Heartbeats program has become a critical lifeline for Israel’s most vulnerable particularly in Ashkelon, where the need has grown exponentially since October 7.
Since its launch in Ashkelon in May 2023, the program has provided transformative support to at-risk families with young children, adapting to the demands of war while fostering resilience and hope. Heartbeats Ashkelon offers a lifeline to families through personalised mentorship and community-building activities. The program focuses on equipping families with tools to overcome trauma and build emotional resilience. From mentorship to home visits and community events, Heartbeats creates an environment where parents and children can thrive despite the adversities they face daily.

In January 2024, Heartbeats launched Gan Ima Abba (“Mummy-Daddy Kindergarten”), a nurturing space for parents and children under three who are not yet in formal education. Activities such as shared breakfasts, music sessions, and motor skill exercises help develop stronger parent-child bonds and create a sense of community among young families. This program is a cornerstone of Heartbeats’ mission to strengthen families by building connections and fostering shared growth.
Other notable initiatives include a Tu Bishvat celebration that brought together 50 families for a joyful day of performances, drumming workshops, and tree-planting activities, symbolising both environmental care and resilience. A series of postpartum meetings offered mothers guidance on parenthood while strengthening bonds with their newborns. These initiatives reflect Heartbeats’ holistic approach, addressing both emotional and practical needs in a community deeply affected by conflict.
The war has tested families in Ashkelon in unimaginable ways, with constant fear, sirens, and instability becoming part of daily life. Heartbeats adapted quickly, transitioning to remote support during the height of the conflict and offering families tools to manage children’s behavioural regressions and emotional stress. This flexibility has been vital in maintaining the program’s connection with the community and ensuring families feel supported even in the toughest times. Heartbeats has also been instrumental in establishing critical partnerships with local entities like the welfare department and community centres. These collaborations enable the program to identify families in need and provide comprehensive support. The ability to recruit new families and expand the program even during wartime proves both the trust Heartbeats has built and the urgent demand for its services.
For the Rom family, Heartbeats has been a source of guidance and stability. With two young children, including a 2.5-year-old diagnosed with autism, and a newborn, the family faced significant challenges. Through the mentorship program, the family received tailored support to navigate their unique circumstances. The Heartbeats mentor worked closely with the parents and daycare staff to secure an aide for their older child, allowing him to remain in daycare and easing the strain on the family. With the mentor’s help, the parents developed routines and communication strategies that have strengthened their bond with their son and transformed how he is perceived both at home and at daycare.
By empowering families with practical tools and emotional support, the program helps parents and children navigate crises and emerge stronger together.

Heartbeats is more than a program; it’s a light in the darkness for families in Ashkelon and beyond. Through its innovative initiatives, personalised mentorship, and commitment to resilience, Heartbeats is helping Israel’s youngest generation overcome the challenges of today and build a brighter tomorrow.
