Masa: A journey that shapes a lifetime

For young Jews around the world, there is no substitute for time spent living in Israel. It changes not only how they see the world, but how they see themselves. Masa, which means “journey” in Hebrew, provides exactly that opportunity: immersive long-term programs in Israel that strengthen Jewish identity, connection, and leadership.

Since its founding in 2004, Masa has welcomed over 160,000 participants from more than 60 countries. These are not tourist trips. They are deep, structured experiences that include volunteering, internships and study abroad. It is a platform for leadership, a launchpad for future Jewish engagement, and a cornerstone of Israel-diaspora relations. Masa ensures that the next generation of Jews is connected, capable, and committed.

Living in Israel

Every Masa program is designed to connect young Jews to Israel in meaningful, lasting ways. Participants live in Israeli cities and towns, form deep bonds with one another, and engage with Israeli society through work, learning, and service. For many, it is their first extended time in Israel but the beginning of a lifelong connection.

Volunteering builds community

Masa places participants in Israel’s geographic and social periphery, where they volunteer in schools, teach English, and support vulnerable communities. In doing so, they both give and gain. Israeli society benefits from their presence, and participants gain new purpose, skills, and a profound sense of belonging.

Investing in Jewish continuity

Independent research confirms what participants already know: Masa is life-changing. Ninety-one percent say that living in Israel was the most effective way to strengthen their relationship with the country. Eighty-seven percent report that they now actively promote Israel in their home communities. Participants are more likely to contribute to Jewish causes, engage in Jewish life, and take on leadership roles.

Preparing for the future

Many Masa participants use their time in Israel to explore career pathways, build new networks, and prepare for the possibility of Aliyah. The combination of real-world experience and personal growth gives them the tools to succeed – whether they return home with renewed purpose or decide to stay and build a life in Israel.
